LIVING AND LEARNING IN PORTUGAL
A new setting can make new experiences possible.
Physical distance can help interrupt difficult dynamics and create openness to something new. A change of location alone is not the solution.
WHY PORTUGAL?
A new environment can offer the opportunity to find calm and step away from entrenched patterns. Away from previous social influences, there is space to experience everyday life differently and develop new perspectives. Important people and the responsible authorities remain involved in the support.
SCHOOL & EDUCATION
Many young people have not attended school for an extended period before admission or need a different approach to learning. Educational support is therefore tailored to their individual situation. Depending on need, education may take place in a 1:1 setting with a learning mentor, through partner schools or—where appropriate—at a local school. The focus may include a lower secondary qualification or further school qualifications as well as vocational orientation.
LOCAL CONNECTIONS
Young people should also have opportunities to participate in local life outside the care setting. Depending on their needs and interests, connections are developed with schools, work-placement providers, sports and leisure activities, and other local opportunities. Medical care and therapeutic support can also be arranged locally when needed.
